Program Assistant – UM Indigenous Birding Club (Work-Study)
Location: Various | Wage: $17.00/hr | Hours: 3–4 per week
Term: Sept 17, 2025 – Feb 27, 2026

Are you passionate about birds, community, and Indigenous knowledge? Join the UM Indigenous Birding Club as our Program Assistant and help bring land-based, culturally grounded events to life.

​

You’ll coordinate and support five exciting events from October to February, including:

  • A community talk led by an Elder or Knowledge Keeper

  • A snowy owl expedition with a focus on land-based learning

  • A Wingspan board game night

  • A guided winter bird walk

  • UM’s Christmas Bird Count, part of a national citizen science initiative
     

Your responsibilities:

  • Coordinate logistics (booking, scheduling, speakers, transportation)

  • Promote events through culturally grounded social media content

  • Capture and share photos, stories, and reels

  • Design posts using Canva

  • Collaborate with the Program Coordinator of Indigenous Leadership Programming

  • Support Indigenous student engagement, cultural connection, and land-based learning
     

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has a strong interest in Indigenous knowledge, birds, and environmental stewardship

  • Communicates clearly and respectfully

  • Has experience with events, social media, and tools like Instagram and Canva

  • Can collaborate in diverse, intergenerational teams

  • Is familiar with UM and its Indigenous student community
     

THIS POSITION IS DESIGNATED FOR INDIGENOUS CANDIDATES. APPLICANTS MUST SELF-DECLARE ON THEIR COVER LETTER/RESUME AS INDIGENOUS (FIRST NATION, METIS AND/OR INUIT).
 

Requirements:

  • Have proof of a 2025–2026 government student aid package of at least $2,000; or, proof of 2025–2026 Indigenous band sponsorship, Métis Nation post-secondary funding, or disability funding.

  • Be registered at the University of Manitoba as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in both terms (Fall 2025 and Winter 2026).

  • Have achieved a satisfactory academic standing with a minimum 2.0 institutional grade point average in their previous academic session (not applicable for new UM students).

  • Be residing in Manitoba throughout the Work-Study employment term.
     

Wage: $17.00/hr
Start Date: 09/17/2025
End Date: 02/27/2026
Hours per week: 3–4
